We all engage in some form of negotiation almost every day. Whether it's with your family, at work, with friends, while shopping, etc.
But what if you find yourself in a dangerous scenario? How would you talk your way out?
In this article, I'll share three hostile negotiation tactics you can use to escape.
Knowing how to use active listening has two advantages.
Firstly, you will be able to gather the information that you could use in planning your escape.
And secondly, it can help build rapport with whomever you are talking to.
To use active listening, simply concentrate on what the person is saying as opposed to what you are going to say in return. It is a good practice to rephrase what they stated in your own words.
The main idea here is to ask questions and use covert approaches to acquire information, but to do it in a way that does not make your target suspect of your actions.
When targeting someone for information, go for the weak link if possible. This is usually whoever is nicest to you (gives you extra food, for example).
A barrier is anything that gets in the way of making a deal. More often than not, both parties in any serious negotiation will have numerous barriers.
It is important to remember that it is the barriers you need to overcome, not the person. No matter what obstacles arise, stay calm and polite and focus on the deal.
Using hostile negotiation tactics can be applied in everyday life also. For example, you will be surprised how active listening can strengthen almost any relationship.
