Many people think parkour is dangerous.

While injuries are not unheard of, there are some simple things you can do to prevent them.

Read on to learn what they are.

Warm-up and Stretch

Does stretching help prevent injuries?

YES!

It is important to warm up and stretch before and after any physical activity. Make this a habit.

You can do both general and targeted warm-ups.

As an example of a targeted warm-up, if your goal is self-defense, start with shadow boxing. If you're going to do some sprints, it's advisable to jog first.

After exercise, you should stretch and cool down to avoid injury or soreness.

Strength Training

When you first start practicing a new physical activity, your body is not used to it.

It is highly possible that you will be using muscles you don’t normally use. And if those muscles aren’t strong enough yet, your chances of injury are higher.

As an example, if you're a beginner and try to sprint without proper conditioning, there's a good possibility you'll tear a muscle in your leg or roll your ankle since your muscles can't handle the impact.

Strength training exercises such as kongs, quadrupedal walking, and pull-ups are good starting points for parkour because they mimic parkour techniques.

Know Your Capabilities

Lastly, always be mindful of your own capabilities.

It applies to both the learning areas and the difficulty of the techniques that you are attempting to do, especially when you are a starter.

Trying a high-risk move with a technique you are not well-trained in can be very dangerous. Learn it well first on safe ground.

For example, if you want to jump a gap of more than two meters, you might begin by practicing it on the ground. This allows you to gain confidence and improve your ability before doing it for real where if you miss you will get injured.
