Safety in Training

While physical fitness and skills training are crucial components of the Survival Fitness Plan, safety is equally important. Read and follow these guidelines to get the most out of your training while minimizing the risk of injury.

Use Safety Gear

You can train in the Survival Fitness Plan with almost no equipment, but when it comes to safety you should not skimp. Here are some recommended safety items depending on the activity. This list is not comprehensive. It contains essentials and some recommendations.

Self-Defense. Mainly needed for sparring and bag work. Gloves, shin pads, body protection, mouth guard, groin guard, training weapons.

Parkour. Loose 'long' clothing (tracksuits are good), parkour shoes, gloves, knee and elbow pads, crash mat.

Swimming. Goggles, ear plugs.

It is also wise to remove jewelry and anything else that might get caught on something.

Learn the Safety Techniques

The skills in the SFP training app progress in a manner that allows you to learn the fundamentals and safety techniques first. DO NOT skip these.

Tapping Out

Tapping out is something you can do when you want to submit/give up—when a lock starts to hurt, for example. Tap your opponent at least twice, so that he feels it. He must disengage immediately. If you cannot reach your opponent, tap the floor. You can also use a verbal tap-out, such as “stop.”

Although tapping out is a fight training term, you should apply it to all the activities. The would translate to knowing when to quit. When you go too hard you get fatigued and are more likely to make poor decisions and/or 'slip up'.

There is no shame in tapping out. It is better to stop early so you can train tomorrow. This doesn't mean you shouldn't push yourself. Constant improvement is important. Just don't over-push yourself. It's a fine line and everyone is different. If in doubt, quit too early rather than too late.

Progress Slowly

Tapping out is about stopping before you make mistakes. Progress slowly will hopefully prevent mistakes in the first place.

The skills in the Survival Fitness Plan are fun and exciting to learn. You may want to 'jump' ahead and learn the 'cool' stuff right away.

Don't do this!

Learn the fundamentals well and revisit them often. Only progress when you are ready.

The Survival Fitness Plan training app will naturally progress you through the skills. But everyone is different. In the end, you are the one that knows when you are ready to level up.

Be Sensible

This is all about using a little common sense. Even if you think you can do something, should you? It may be easy, but if you fail, what is the consequence.

A good analogy for this is a gap jump in parkour. Maybe the gap is only a meter wide, but how far is the drop? Are you risking serious injury or worse? The chances of you not making it are slim, but things are unpredictable. Is there a slippery spot you couldn't see, or perhaps you stumble on a pebble.

In training you get to access these things. In a real-life scenario you may not have time. A good rule of thumb is that if doing something is too dangerous for training, then it's too dangerous in real life.

Another big factor for being sensible is to only train with a clear mind. If you are under the influence, it is better to skip training. Or better still, don't be under the influence. Drugs and alcohol are bad for longevity!

Listen to Your Body

Your body will tell you when you are reaching breaking point. Listen to it! If you ignore it for too long, you will get injured. And if you keep ignoreing it, those injuries may never heal.

If you are fatigued, do less risky activities. And if you are injured, rest!

And don't ever skip warming up before your training session and cooling down (mobility) after.

Learn First Aid

You can prevent many injuries from getting worse by taking care of them immediately. A basic first aid course will teach you those skills.

It will also teach you how to literally save lives in case of serious injuries, especially if you are training outdoors, e.g., mountain bike riding.

Conclusion

In conclusion, safety should always be a top priority when training for the Survival Fitness Plan. Whether you are engaging in cardio exercises, strength training, or practicing your skills, following the proper safety guidelines is essential to prevent injury and ensure the longevity of your training.

By incorporating safe training practices into your routine, you will be able to make progress while minimizing the risk of setbacks due to injury.
