Mastering parkour isn't a walk in the park, as it demands discipline, strength, and determination.
There are numerous essential skills that practitioners must develop and perfect to enhance their performance. In this article, we'll focus on three advanced parkour moves you should strive to accomplish to take your skills to the next level.
The dive roll is a parkour move used to prevent injury when coming down on your head. It is commonly used when diving over an obstacle, but it can also be used in accidental falls where there is not enough room to land feet-first. If you fell or were thrown off something high, it is best to land feet-first and do a safety roll, if possible. Before attempting the dive roll, ensure that you are proficient in the safety roll.
The technique for doing the dive roll is very similar to the one for the forward roll, but there is a lot more impact and momentum. You are coming toward your head instead of landing on your feet first, which makes it more challenging. Start by practicing the forward roll from a handstand. Lower yourself with your arms, then lean forward slightly to tuck your head as you go into the roll. Keep your body strong (arms, core, legs, and neck) as you allow your body to “collapse” into the roll.
Once you are comfortable with the forward roll, you can start jumping into the dive roll from a standing position. Kick your leg back as you jump to help get your hips over. As you hit the ground, absorb some of the impact with your arms by keeping them strong while allowing them to collapse. Use your arms to ensure you get over your head. Slowly progress until you are doing a full dive roll, and then train at this level until the movement is instinctive.
The reverse vault is a parkour move for when there's not enough space to swing your leg, but you have momentum. To learn, try the reverse safety vault or the twisting side sapiens. For the latter, face forward and twist as you come down from the move.
Finish by landing on the foot closest to the obstacle first and keep spinning until you're facing away from it. Practice the reverse vault after other vaults or when being flung into an obstacle.
Start turning your back to the obstacle a step away and place your hand on it to direct momentum.
The wall climb-up is a quick and efficient way to pull yourself up onto a wall from a hanging position. To learn, start with a wall you can easily cat leap to and use the momentum to push your hips back and pull up with your arms.
Transition from hanging to having your hands on top of the obstacle and push up to stand. Strength exercises like dips, pull-ups, and traversing can help improve technique and make it easier to do from a static hang.
Eventually, you can progress to a one-armed climb-up.
To summarize, parkour may seem like an impossible feat to achieve, but with the right training, dedication, and mindset, you can achieve incredible things.
The three advanced moves discussed in this article require a combination of strength, agility, and fearlessness.
While they certainly aren't easy to accomplish, these moves will help you take your parkour skills to the next level and impress everyone around you.
Keep practicing, stay focused, and always remember to prioritize safety before attempting any advanced moves.
