Many individuals get taken advantage of by people who prey on naive consumers and uninformed business owners.

Knowing how to bargain is an important skill to have whether you are at home or traveling abroad.

Learn about the three steps I use to make sure the deal goes smoothly for everyone!

Set Your Max Price

How much are you willing to spend?

Setting yourself a maximum price to spend on a specific item gives you a clear benchmark of when to walk away.

Before you buy anything, compare prices with other stores. If needed, just look it up on Amazon. Once you know the general asking price, set a maximum price you are willing to pay and keep it in your head.

Ask the Price

Once your maximum price has been set, ask how much it costs without giving your maximum price range. Simply ask about the price and see what the seller says.

If the seller offers you the item for less than your maximum, do the deal. Even if you think he or she would go lower, it’s already lower than you were willing to pay, so why bother with the hassle (unless you really enjoy bargaining)

If it is higher than your maximum price, you can simply offer what your maximum price is, or a bit lower if you want a room to haggle more.

Win-Win or Walk Away

If you make a bargain and you're both satisfied with it, it's called a win-win situation.

If the asking price is over your maximum, even with some haggling from you, then walk away.

Often, depending on what country you are in, the seller will reduce the price when you start to walk away because they know they have room for it but are simply bargaining.

If you do decide to buy, Make sure you stay to your word and don't change your mind on the spot, especially when reassessing your pricing.

Conclusion

Before we wrap up, one last piece of advice is to never make a big purchase on the spur of the moment.

Remember to take some time to think about it, and after you've decided, just follow the three steps: set the maximum price, ask for the price, and either receive a fair bargain or walk away.

Bargaining is not the same as hostile negotiation. Although certain principles can be applied, there is much more to it.
